I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You
Those hipper than me have already been singing the praises of Jacksonville's Black Kids. I finally got to hear a track on Sirius, and boy, am I digging them! Their music is a strange mix of New Order meets the Smiths meets Prince plus some '60s r & b flavoring. The only material they have out is a four song ep, Wizard of Ahhhs, that you can listen for free at their Myspace page. The first track, "Hit the Heartbrakes", plays like a very pop-injected "Little Red Corvette". "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You" is a jangly rocker and the song that was my introduction to Black Kids. If I had heard this song before I made my big Best Songs of 2007 list, it would have probably landed in the top ten. "Hurricane Jane" is the other really standout track and has a great chorus. It's a slower jam in the vein of New Order's "This Time of Night", "Thieves Like Us", or "All Day Long". The closer, "I've Underestimated My Charm (Again)" is another upbeat number and it closes with some very Motown/Doo Wop influenced harmonies. From what I can tell, Black Kids still do not have a label, but have finally secured management. Hopefully, they'll come around Louisville soon, because they sound like they'd put on a really fun show. If you like the roller rink vibe of the Go! Team, then you'll probably get a kick out of Black Kids.
Update: You can download Wizard of Ahhhs for free from the official Black Kids website.
