The Best Songs of 2007 - #30 - #26
And here’s the third installment:
30. “Is There a Ghost” by Band of Horses – I’m conflicted. Can I live in Louisville, KY, the home of My Morning Jacket, and like a band that sounds very similar? BofH has similar Brian Wilson-esque, reverbed vocals and the tendency to go from sweet to balls-out rock, which is not unlike MMJ. Oh, and both are big on beards. Does it really matter? No. This is a pretty rockin’ song with very few lyrics, so it’s easy to sing along to… if you can hit Ben Bridwell’s range.
29. “You’re a Wolf” by Sea Wolf – This is one of those weird songs that has part of the band’s name in the song title. The weirdest thing about this number is that the chorus reminds me of Prince’s “Erotic City”. I swear the chorus uses the same frickin’ vocal melody!
28. “Men’s Needs” by The Cribs – I love the stuttering bass and guitar work on this song and Ryan Jarman has a cool, snotty Adam Ant-like voice during the verse. Also, you can’t go wrong with a well-belted out chorus, which is provided by brother and bassist Gary. They even have little brother Ross on the drums, but I think they sound way cooler than Hanson.
27. “If That’s the Case, Then I Don’t Know” by The Electric Soft Parade – A good mix of superfuzzed out guitar and low key vocals. The Smiths fan in me likes a good, long song title, too.
26. “Take Me to the Riot” by Stars – This is good, ol’ fashion college rock. The boy/girl harmonies between lead singer Torquil Campbell and guitarist Amy Millan are hushed and pretty. This allows for the chorus (which gets stuck in my head for days after a listen) to have even more of a punch.
