"Slap bracelets were '90s, right?"

In the course of looking for old things to wear for an '80s-themed birthday party tonight, I came across my diary from 1988. For days, I wrote in it religiously. Here are three of the first few entries, errors intact:

JANUARY 1
New Years Day
One Year in Maryland!

Dear Diary,
On Christmas, Leslie was a dummy. She wanted to put her dumb Barbie & the Rockers record "In Consert". And then we fought. But we're okay now. Last night we had a party! Jean, Craig and Diane came over and we watched rock vidios and "The Super Bowl Shuffle". At midnight, we all threw balloons and streamers and blew our horns. Today was exceptional.

JANUARY 2

Dear Diary,
Today we went ice-skating with Jean. We invited thinks-she's-so-hot Diane but, as usual she didn't want to go. My mom says she misses out on all the fun. That figures. On New Year's Eve she didn't want to play Twister with the rest of us (Jean, Craig, Leslie and I.) Today on "Amen" the deacon was in this room with a boa constrictor called Crusher! He lived though.

JANUARY 5

Dear Diary,
Today at school Mrs. Haraway read our minds! Everybody knows that there is some kind of trick to it. She said that she would tell us the secret on the last day of school.

Unfortunately, that was the final entry; we'll never know how my fourth grade teacher was able to pull off such an astounding mental feat. Sigh.

Man, I really wish I could find my Hypercolor shirt.

Hypercolor shirt! I had one of those- haven't thought about those for years. Slap bracelets were a bit late for me- in my day the rage were those gummy plastic bracelets that you could wear sort of wrapped around each other... I'm trying to think of some other stuff- friendship pins... stone & acid washed jeans of course...Tretorn shoes... ah, memories of grade school.

Friendship pins! And bracelets -- I made dozens upon dozens of friendship bracelets. And those plastic woven keychain thingies, too.

Never found the shirt... I think my mom gave it away.
